About the WCRHEA

‘Island Sunrise’. Designed and hooked by Sara Judith

The Western Canada Rug Hooking Education Association (WCRHEA) was founded in 2004 to train and certify teachers in the Western Canadian provinces, and promote our talented teachers to the rug hooking community. Previously, aspiring teachers travelled to Nova Scotia, Ontario, or the United States to be accredited as teachers. The creation of the WCRHEA was the vision of two rug hookers from Saskatchewan (Doris Fulmore and Flora Hamilton). The organization includes members from all of the Western provinces as well as the Yukon.

The WCRHEA trains and educates teachers in the fibre art of traditional rug hooking, and promotes our talented teachers to the rug hooking community.  We also work to promote awareness and appreciation of rug hooking in Western Canada by supporting both rug schools and exhibitions. Our intent is to be as inclusive as possible, embracing the traditions of quality craftsmanship in rug hooking while exploring the boundaries of artistic possibilities.

The WCRHEA most recently offered its required Principles of Rug Hooking Education course for prospective teachers in September 2023 at Prairie Harvest Rug Hooking School and is currently supporting a lively community of teacher-trainees. If you’d like to join them, please check out our Teacher Accreditation Program.

In 2012, the association offered its first bi-annual WCRHEA Conference.  The conference  convenes a few days prior to the Prairie Harvest Rug Hooking School and allows teachers to network, share, and improve their teaching skills. Our next one, in 2024, will focus on tips, tricks, techniques and equipment for teaching online in a post-pandemic world.

We are working to distinguish ourselves by not only supporting those who have a desire to share their love of rug hooking by becoming teachers, but to educate beyond our Teacher Accreditation program by offering a self-study Professional Development program that will further assist teachers in their personal, business, and artistic development. The professional development program encourages teachers to embark on an in-depth exploration of areas of rug hooking that are of interest to them.  The goal is to encourage teachers to continue to develop as teachers, rug hookers, and artists.

Thank you for coming to our website.  If you are looking for a teacher in your area, or are looking to hire a rug hooking teacher, please check out our listing of talented teachers.  Each teacher has a summary and detailed biography and we provide two additional listings; one alphabetical and one by subject matter to help you find the right teacher for your workshop or school.
